On August 18, 2026, the SISU Empowering Others' Street Outreach Planning Committee came together for a successful in-person meeting. The meeting gave members an opportunity to share ideas, review community needs, and discuss how SISU can continue providing hands-on support to individuals and families throughout the Lehigh Valley.

SISU believes that helping someone begins with listening. During street outreach, the team takes time to speak directly with individuals, learn about their situations, and understand what type of assistance they may need. Every person has a different story, and SISU works to make sure each individual feels seen, heard, and respected.

The committee discussed ways to strengthen this personal approach and respond more effectively to the needs of people experiencing homelessness or other difficult circumstances. SISU’s outreach work is not limited to handing out supplies. The team works directly with individuals to identify their immediate needs, provide encouragement, connect them with helpful services, and offer continued guidance whenever possible.

SISU volunteers meet people where they are. Through street outreach, the organization provides essential items such as clothing, shoes, hygiene products, water, food, and other basic necessities. The team also shares information about housing, transportation, healthcare, HIV prevention, substance-use support, and other community resources.

This hands-on approach allows SISU to build trust with individuals who may feel forgotten or unsure about where to find help. A simple conversation can become the first step toward receiving services, finding stability, or regaining hope.

During the meeting, committee members also discussed the importance of preparing and organizing donated items before each outreach activity. Careful planning helps ensure that supplies are available, volunteers understand their responsibilities, and the team is ready to respond respectfully and efficiently.

The meeting also focused on teamwork and communication. By bringing the Planning Committee and Street Outreach Committee together, SISU can better coordinate volunteers, donations, community partnerships, and future outreach activities. Each member contributes ideas, experience, and a shared commitment to helping others.

SISU’s work is guided by its M.A.T.H. approach: Mentoring, Advocacy, Transportation, and Housing. These four areas help the organization look beyond a person’s immediate need and consider what additional support may improve their quality of life.

For SISU, street outreach is about more than one day of service. It is about creating relationships, following up, advocating for individuals, and helping them navigate systems that may feel confusing or difficult. SISU remains involved and works alongside each person whenever possible.

The successful August 18 meeting showed the committee’s dedication to continuing this important work. Members left the meeting motivated and prepared to strengthen SISU’s outreach efforts, expand community partnerships, and reach more people who need support.
