Your Story Is Still Being Written:
Encouraging the Next Generation
By Isa Sanchez, Co-founder of SISU Empowering Others
It was a joy and an honor to speak with the young people at the Boys & Girls Club and share my struggles, my battles, and my successes. I wanted them to hear an honest story about perseverance—and to know that difficult beginnings do not have to determine their future.
As a teenage mother, I often felt like I was racing against the clock. I was pumping breast milk at school, facing judgment, and trying to build a future for myself and my son. Becoming a mother at a young age brought challenges, but it did not define everything I could become.
In 12th grade, I made the honor roll for the first time. I became president of the Latino Club and participated in Team Summit and Future Business Leaders. One of my proudest moments was graduating with my two-year-old son by my side.
Those accomplishments reminded me that I could keep moving forward, even when the journey was difficult.
College took longer than I had hoped, but I continued working toward my education and earned my bachelor’s degree. I became a homeowner in my early twenties and was able to get a better car. Each milestone represented hard work, sacrifice, and determination as I built a more stable life for my family.
Part of me wanted to prove the doubters wrong. More than anything, though, I wanted my son to understand that my sacrifices were for him. I wanted to show him that our circumstances did not have to determine our future.
Along the way, I learned how much the right support can matter. Sometimes, encouragement comes from people you least expect. They become mentors, recognize your strengths, and help you see possibilities you may struggle to see in yourself.
I also learned that hurtful words can come from people closest to you. That pain is real, but someone else’s opinion does not determine your worth or limit what you can accomplish.
Sharing these lessons with our next generation was a privilege. My hope is that the young people walked away feeling encouraged, understanding that their choices matter, and knowing they can ask for guidance when life feels overwhelming. Setbacks do not erase their potential, and they do not have to navigate every challenge alone
This belief is at the heart of SISU Empowering Others. Through mentorship, advocacy, transportation, housing support, and connections to services, we help people find the tools and support they need to move toward a better quality of life.
If sharing my story helped even one young person believe in themselves, it was worth it. Thank you to the Boys & Girls Club for creating space for this meaningful conversation.
To every young person working through a difficult chapter: keep going, seek support, and give yourself room to grow. Your story is still being written.
