Empowering Through Presence: SISU Visits the Salvation Army Shelter
At SISU Empowering Others, transformation begins not just with access to services, but with meaningful human connection. Recently, SISU had the opportunity to visit the women’s shelter at the Salvation Army, offering more than resources — offering hope, encouragement, and empowerment.
On two separate days, SISU representatives visited the shelter with open hearts and a mission to uplift and support. Jackie, one of SISU’s dedicated team members, visited first. She spent time with the women, listening to their stories, offering encouragement, and planting the first seeds of trust — a reminder that they are not alone on this journey.
On May 5th, SISU founder Isa Sanchez also visited the shelter. She introduced SISU Empowering Others and spoke to the women about the organization’s mission to walk alongside individuals navigating hardship, offering mentorship, advocacy, and access to life-changing services.
Isa’s message focused on inner strength — encouraging the women to view their current circumstances as temporary, and to tap into their own resilience. She reminded them that despite the challenges they’re facing, they hold within them the courage and capacity to rebuild and thrive. She shared the meaning of "SISU" — a word rooted in Finnish culture that embodies determination, perseverance, and inner strength — and encouraged them to hold on to that same spirit.
Beyond encouragement, Isa took action. She began referring several women to training programs, job opportunities, and vital community resources. Whether it was helping connect them to medical assistant training, job readiness support, or mental health services, SISU made it clear that help is not only available — it’s accessible.
This visit was not about offering charity; it was about providing a pathway to empowerment. SISU’s approach centers on walking alongside individuals as they move forward, making sure each person feels seen, supported, and believed in.
As the relationship between SISU and the Salvation Army shelter continues to grow, plans are underway to return regularly and offer additional support. The shelter may be a place of temporary refuge, but with the right encouragement and resources, it can become a springboard to lasting stability.
Together, we rise. Together, we empower.
